Kidney Health Summit

OVERVIEW

The global burden of chronic kidney disease or CKD is rapidly increasing with a projection of becoming the fifth most common cause of years of life lost globally by the year 2040. Currently, around 850 million people are affected by different types of kidney disorders annually. Up to one in ten adults worldwide has chronic kidney disease (CKD), which is invariably irreversible and mostly progressive. In India too, which is home to one of the largest NCDs every year and nearly 5.8 million people die every year from NCDs, that include different kinds of kidney ailments as well.

With a rising prevalence of these diseases in India, cases related to CKD is also expected to go up and obviously this is the key target population to address. Several studies have also estimated that the number of new patients diagnosed with End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) in India is also over 100,000 per year. It is also important to note that the most common causes of kidney disease in India in both men and women are Diabetes and Hypertension. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) has become a major cause of catastrophic health expenditure. The costs of dialysis and transplantation consumes up to 3% of the annual healthcare budget in high-income countries. People on dialysis can have weaker immune systems, making it harder to fight infections. Crucially, however, both the onset and progression of CKD is often preventable through primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare measures.

KIDNEY HEALTH SUMMIT 2024

Integrated Health and Wellbeing Council has realized the urgent need to spread awareness among people from all walks of life about kidney diseases, including risk factors, making healthy food choices to keep kidneys healthy.

IHW Council under one of its missions of fighting noncommunicable disease initiated an advocacy path and blueprint to fight the CKD in India; the Kidney Health Summit, 18th March 2023. The virtual summit aimed at bringing multiple stakeholders and partners on one single platform, including the Government, national and international organizations, donor agencies, private players in implementing key and innovative solutions to provide the necessary push to promote kidney health through patient empowerment and life participation approach.

The Kidney Care Summit (virtual) will focus on navigating the challenges and opportunities in the evolving landscape of kidney health. The theme reflects the need for proactive strategies, innovation, and collaboration to address the growing burden of kidney diseases globally.
