Biopharma Leader & Strategic Advisor; Former General Manager – Specialty Care (India)

Sanofi Genzyme

Anil Raina is an experienced biopharmaceutical industry leader and strategic advisor with extensive expertise in specialty therapeutics, rare diseases, and pharmaceutical market development in India and South Asia. He previously served as General Manager – Specialty Care (India) at Sanofi Genzyme, the specialty care business unit of Sanofi, where he led the organization’s portfolio focused on rare diseases, multiple sclerosis, and other complex therapeutic areas.

Raina joined Genzyme in 2007 as director of new product planning, playing a foundational role in establishing the biotechnology company’s operations in India and South Asia. Following Genzyme’s integration into Sanofi in 2011, he became part of the broader Sanofi leadership team in India and went on to lead the specialty care business, overseeing strategy, market access, and the launch of several key therapies.

During his tenure, he was instrumental in expanding access to treatments for rare diseases in India, helping build awareness, diagnostic networks, and clinical capacity among physicians and healthcare institutions. Under his leadership, Sanofi’s specialty care unit supported therapies for conditions such as Gaucher disease, Pompe disease, Fabry disease, mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS I), and acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD), while also advancing humanitarian access programs that provided life-saving treatments to patients with lysosomal storage disorders.

Beyond commercial leadership, Raina has been closely associated with advocacy and ecosystem development for rare diseases in India, including collaboration with clinicians, patient groups, and healthcare institutions to build centers of excellence, strengthen diagnostic pathways, and improve treatment accessibility.

Earlier in his career, he held roles across manufacturing, business development, sourcing, and marketing at organizations such as Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Ranbaxy Laboratories, Larsen & Toubro, and Escorts Limited, giving him a broad cross-functional understanding of the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the National Institute of Technology Kurukshetra and an MBA in international business from the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, combining technical and strategic training that has shaped his leadership in the global biopharmaceutical sector.

Today, as a biopharma leader and strategic advisor, Anil Raina continues to contribute to the healthcare ecosystem by advising organizations on specialty therapeutics, innovation strategy, and improving access to advanced treatments for patients with complex and rare diseases.
