Bishow Parajuli
Representative & Country Director
World Food Programme
Bishow Parajuli is the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) Representative and Country Director for India, a role in which he champions food security, nutrition, and climate-resilient livelihoods, working closely with governments, civil society, and development partners to accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger. With more than three decades of experience in development, humanitarian affairs, diplomacy, resource mobilization, and program leadership across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, Parajuli brings a deep understanding of global food systems and institutional strategy to his work. Prior to his current assignment, he has served in senior WFP posts, including Chief of Staff and Director of Government Donor Relations at WFP headquarters in Rome, as well as Country Director and Representative in places such as Yemen and Egypt, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to addressing hunger and strengthening resilience in some of the world’s most vulnerable contexts.
At WFP India, Parajuli has led the organization’s support for large-scale food safety nets and nutrition initiatives, forging strategic partnerships with national and state governments to enhance systems such as the public distribution system, school feeding programs, and supplementary nutrition schemes. Under his leadership, WFP has collaborated with authorities in states like Rajasthan, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh to improve food security outcomes through digitization, supply chain optimization, climate-resilient farming practices, and empowerment of women’s self-help groups. These initiatives reflect his belief that sustainable food systems must blend technical expertise with inclusive policy engagement to benefit the most marginalized communities.
A strong advocate for cross-sectoral approaches, Parajuli has also overseen partnerships with research institutions and think tanks to bolster climate-resilient nutrition security and has helped facilitate knowledge-exchange missions that support regional cooperation on food safety and social protection. His vision emphasizes that food security is not only about emergency response but about building dignified pathways for communities to thrive, improving nutrition, productivity, and resilience in the face of climate challenges.
Through his work at WFP, Parajuli blends operational depth, diplomatic experience, and strategic foresight to drive transformational impact at scale—strengthening institutional capacities, informing policy dialogues, and ensuring that millions of vulnerable lives are reached with sustainable, equitable food solutions.
