Dr. A. Laxmaiah Head

Division of Public Health Nutrition

ICMR- National Institute of Nutrition

Dr. A. Laxmaiah is a distinguished physician, epidemiologist, and public health nutrition specialist who leads the Division of Public Health Nutrition at the ICMR‑National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) in Hyderabad, one of India’s premier institutions for nutrition research and policy‑relevant evidence generation. As Scientist ‘G’ in Director‑grade, he brings more than three decades of scientific and leadership experience to the task of understanding and addressing India’s complex nutrition challenges—from undernutrition and micronutrient deficiencies to the rising burden of overnutrition and diet‑related non‑communicable diseases.

Dr. Laxmaiah’s academic grounding combines medicine (MBBS), postgraduate training in public health (DPH, MPH), business management (MBA), and a Ph.D. in Public Health Nutrition, equipping him with a rare mix of clinical, epidemiological, and systems‑level insights that inform his research and policy work. He has been instrumental in shaping programs that generate high‑quality evidence to inform India’s nutrition policies, including epidemiological studies, operational research, community‑based interventions, and nutrition surveillance systems that help track the health and dietary status of vulnerable populations.

Under his leadership, the Division of Public Health Nutrition at NIN plays a central role in evaluating national nutrition programs, identifying gaps in implementation, and recommending course corrections to strengthen effectiveness on the ground. Dr. Laxmaiah has published extensively in peer‑reviewed national and international journals—including The Lancet, BMJ, and studies on lifestyle and diet‑linked health issues—with his body of work helping to influence academic discourse and practical policy frameworks alike.

His contributions have been recognized by his election as a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), reflecting his impact on advancing nutrition science and public health in India. Importantly, Dr. Laxmaiah’s work continues to support evidence‑driven strategies aimed at reducing malnutrition in all its forms and improving population health outcomes through rigorous research, strategic partnerships, and science‑to‑policy translation.
