Dr. Abhishek Shankar is a respected radiation oncologist and academic with a strong commitment to advancing cancer care, prevention, and policy in India. He serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, where he combines clinical expertise with public health advocacy to address cancer care challenges across diverse population settings. His professional journey in oncology spans roles as a resident, research fellow, and faculty member, reflecting deep engagement with both patient-centered care and scholarly research.
Dr. Shankar’s contributions extend well beyond clinical practice. He is internationally trained in cancer control and prevention, having completed the prestigious Cancer Prevention Fellowship at the U.S. National Cancer Institute, and has received global recognition, including the International Mentorship Award from the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC). He holds leadership positions on multiple national and international committees focused on tobacco control, smoking cessation, and cancer advocacy, and he regularly represents Indian oncology at major global forums.
A prolific scholar, Dr. Shankar has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and serves in editorial leadership roles with leading oncology publications, including as Associate Editor of the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention and South Asian Journal of Cancer and Editor-in-Chief of the Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Care. He is also a founder leader of the Indian Society of Clinical Oncology (ISCO), which works to advance cancer awareness, training, advocacy, and equitable care nationwide.
Beyond academia and clinical practice, Dr. Shankar is known for his community-oriented initiatives, such as the Pink Chain Campaign, which promotes cancer awareness and early detection across India. His work continues to influence cancer control policy, education, and practice—anchored in a deep commitment to improving outcomes and reducing disparities in cancer care.
