Dr. Ajay Khera is an eminent public health expert and the Country Representative—India for EngenderHealth, a global non-profit organization dedicated to advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), gender equality, and equitable health outcomes. He has more than three decades of experience in clinical public health, program leadership, and health systems strengthening, with a particular focus on maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health; communicable disease control; and health equity—expertise he now channels into leading high-impact programs and partnerships in India through EngenderHealth.

Dr. Khera holds an MBBS and an MD from the University of Delhi, along with a Diploma in Gynecology and Obstetrics, grounding him in both clinical medicine and public health. Before joining EngenderHealth, he served the Government of India’s Ministry of Health & Family Welfare in senior technical and leadership roles, including as National Commissioner for Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCHA+N) and Public Health Specialist. He also contributed significantly to child health immunization programs, disease epidemiology, and national health strategy development.

Since taking up his role with EngenderHealth in July 2020, Dr. Khera has steered the organization’s strategic programs in India, working with government partners, civil society, funders, and communities to design and implement gender-transformative health initiatives that expand access to quality SRHR services and build local capacity. His leadership reflects a deep commitment to bringing evidence-based policy and practice to the forefront of reproductive and maternal health, emphasizing equity, respectful care, and gender-integrated approaches within public health systems.

Under his stewardship, EngenderHealth India has strengthened collaborations across public and private sectors—including initiatives on tribal health, gender equality, and equitable nutrition—positioning the organization as a key technical partner in advancing India’s health priorities. Dr. Khera’s work combines clinical insight, systems thinking, and a lifelong dedication to health equity, driving measurable progress in the well-being of women, children, and families across the country.
