Dr. Ambrish Mithal, Padma Bhushan and Dr. B.C. Roy Award recipient, is one of India’s most eminent endocrinologists and diabetologists, recognised for his lifelong commitment to clinical care, research, education, and public health advocacy in metabolic and hormonal disorders. He currently serves as Chairman and Head of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Max Healthcare, leading comprehensive programmes in diabetes care, endocrine disorders and metabolic medicine across one of India’s largest hospital networks, where he ensures care is informed by the latest scientific evidence and global best practices.

Dr. Mithal’s academic journey began with his DM in Endocrinology from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, where he was the first to complete the super-specialty degree in endocrinology, laying the foundation for his pioneering clinical career. Over more than three decades, he has established and led endocrinology and diabetes divisions at major institutions, including Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, and Medanta – The Medicity, before joining Max Healthcare.

His research contributions have helped shape understanding of bone and mineral metabolism, vitamin D deficiency, diabetes and associated metabolic conditions in Indian populations. He was among the first to document widespread vitamin D deficiency in India—a finding that has informed public health strategies, including fortification and awareness initiatives.

Dr. Mithal’s achievements have earned him numerous honours: the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian awards; the Dr. B.C. Roy Award for excellence in medicine; the Laureate Award for International Excellence in Endocrinology from the Endocrine Society (US); and multiple international recognitions for contributions to bone health research.

Beyond clinical leadership, he has served on key national bodies shaping health policy and implementation, including as a domain expert on the Governing Board of the National Health Authority, which oversees the implementation of India’s Ayushman Bharat health coverage reforms. He has also held honorary leadership roles such as President of AIIMS Gorakhpur and past President of professional societies like the Endocrine Society of India and the Indian Society for Bone and Mineral Research.

Through a blend of clinical excellence, research impact, and policy engagement, Dr. Ambrish Mithal has elevated the practice of endocrinology in India and advanced the cause of metabolic health at both national and international levels.
