Dr. Debashish Danda was a globally respected clinician-scientist, academic leader, and one of India’s foremost pioneers in rheumatology and clinical immunology. He served as Professor and Founder of the Department of Clinical Immunology & Rheumatology at Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore, where he built one of the country’s most advanced and influential centers for autoimmune and rheumatic disease care, research, and training.

Over a distinguished career spanning nearly three decades at CMC Vellore, Dr. Danda played a transformative role in establishing rheumatology as a specialized discipline in India. He conceptualized and developed the department from the ground up, introducing advanced diagnostic and research capabilities and creating a strong academic training ecosystem for future specialists. His work focused on India-relevant clinical research and translational science, helping bridge global scientific advances with local healthcare needs.

A leading authority in autoimmune diseases, his clinical and research expertise spanned conditions such as systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren’s syndrome, Takayasu arteritis, spondyloarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. He was widely recognized for his contributions to understanding disease patterns in the Indian population and for advancing evidence-based management of complex rheumatic disorders.

Dr. Danda was also a prolific academician, with over 400 scientific publications and thousands of citations, reflecting his global influence in rheumatology research. He served as editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases and held key leadership roles in international and regional bodies, including serving as president of the Asia Pacific League of Associations for Rheumatology (APLAR) and former president of the Indian Rheumatology Association.

Beyond research and clinical care, he was deeply committed to education and mentorship, having trained a generation of rheumatologists who continue to advance the specialty across India and globally.
