Dr. Govind K. Makharia is a distinguished gastroenterologist, clinician-scientist, and academic leader who serves as a professor in the Department of Gastroenterology & Human Nutrition at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. With over two decades of experience at one of India’s most prestigious medical institutions, he has made significant contributions to clinical gastroenterology, translational research, and medical education.

Dr. Makharia is internationally recognized for his pioneering work on celiac disease, where he played a transformative role in establishing that the condition—once considered rare in India—is in fact prevalent in the Indian population. His research has contributed to landmark epidemiological studies and helped shape national and global understanding of the disease’s burden in Asia. His work extends to other key areas such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), intestinal tuberculosis, irritable bowel syndrome, and functional gastrointestinal disorders, where he has contributed to improved diagnostic approaches and treatment protocols.
