Dr. Harsh Vardhan began his political journey in 1993 as a Member of the Delhi Legislative Assembly and served in several key ministerial roles, including Health, Education, and Law. As Delhi’s Health Minister, he conceived and launched the landmark Pulse Polio Immunization Programme, which later evolved into India’s nationwide polio eradication campaign. The initiative became one of the world’s most successful public health interventions, contributing significantly to India’s certification as a polio-free nation by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2014. He also pioneered the Delhi Model Rational Drug Policy and introduced some of India’s earliest anti-smoking legislation, both of which received international recognition.

As Union Minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan led several strategic ministries, including Health & Family Welfare, Science & Technology, Earth Sciences, and Environment, Forest & Climate Change. During his tenure, he championed healthcare reforms, biomedical research, biotechnology innovation, digital health initiatives, and scientific advancement. He played a central leadership role in India’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, coordinating national public health strategies, expanding testing and healthcare infrastructure, and supporting the rapid development and rollout of indigenous vaccines and medical technologies.
