Dr. Kamini A. Rao is one of India’s most celebrated pioneers in reproductive medicine and assisted reproductive technology (ART), widely acknowledged as a visionary who transformed infertility care in the country. She is the Founder and Medical Director of Milann – The Fertility Centre and Co-Founder & Chairperson of Dr. Kamini Rao Hospitals, institutions that have become benchmarks for clinical excellence, innovation, and research in fertility and women’s healthcare.

With a distinguished career spanning more than four decades, Dr. Rao has been instrumental in introducing several landmark advancements in reproductive medicine in India. After completing her medical education in India, she pursued advanced training in reproductive medicine, obstetrics, and gynecology in the United Kingdom, earning prestigious qualifications including MRCOG, FRCOG, and a Master’s degree in Obstetrics & Gynaecology from the University of Liverpool. Returning to India in 1989, she established the Bangalore Assisted Conception Centre, which later evolved into Milann – The Fertility Centre, now one of the country’s leading fertility networks.

Dr. Rao’s pioneering achievements have fundamentally shaped assisted reproduction in India. She established South India’s first semen bank, was associated with India’s first SIFT (Semen Intra-Fallopian Transfer) baby, and led the birth of South India’s first babies conceived through ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) and laser-assisted hatching. These breakthroughs significantly advanced the availability of sophisticated fertility treatments in the country and established new standards in reproductive healthcare.

Beyond her clinical accomplishments, Dr. Rao has made exceptional contributions to education, research, and institution building. Through the International Institute for Training and Research in Reproductive Health (IIRRH) and Milann Academy, she has trained hundreds of fertility specialists, embryologists, and gynecologists who now practice across India and internationally. She has authored numerous scientific publications and textbooks, served as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Infertility & Fetal Medicine, and has played a significant role in developing national guidelines for assisted reproductive technology and stem cell research.

A respected leader in professional medical organizations, Dr. Rao has served as President of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) and President of the Indian Society for Assisted Reproduction (ISAR), contributing significantly to policy development, medical education, and ethical standards in reproductive medicine.

In recognition of her extraordinary contributions to medicine, education, and women’s healthcare, Dr. Rao was conferred the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, by the Government of India.
