Dr. Mohammed Abdul Waheed is a distinguished physician-scientist, Padma Shri awardee, and one of India’s most respected leaders in Unani medicine, widely recognized for his transformative contributions to clinical research, institutional development, and evidence-based traditional medicine. He served as the former officiating director of the Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine (CRI/NRIUMSD), Hyderabad, under the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM), Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India.

With over four decades of exemplary service, Dr. Waheed has played a pioneering role in modernizing and scientifically validating Unani medicine through rigorous clinical research, product development, and institutional strengthening. A graduate in Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) from Osmania University, he further enhanced his scientific capabilities through advanced clinical research training at premier institutions, including AIIMS New Delhi and KEM Hospital Mumbai, and international research exposure in the United States.

His career has been defined by his mission to bridge traditional medicine with modern scientific frameworks. At CRIUM Hyderabad, he led multi-centric Phase II and Phase III clinical trials on Unani therapies for diseases such as vitiligo, diabetes, hypertension, and hepatitis, ensuring adherence to WHO and USFDA Good Clinical Practice standards. He was instrumental in advancing the scientific credibility of Unani medicine by developing standardized therapeutic formulations, especially in dermatological and autoimmune disorders, while also establishing advanced research infrastructure for preclinical and clinical validation.

Dr. Waheed is particularly renowned for his groundbreaking work in vitiligo management, where he developed multiple innovative Unani formulations and integrative treatment approaches that have benefited thousands of patients globally. His research, publications, and scientific leadership have significantly elevated India’s profile in traditional medicine innovation.

In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, he received the Padma Shri in 2017, one of India’s highest civilian honors, along with numerous accolades, including the Best Scientist Award from AIIMS and multiple national and international honors for scientific excellence.

Beyond research and administration, Dr. Waheed has served on several national scientific committees, pharmacopoeia boards, and policy advisory bodies under the Ministry of AYUSH, contributing to broader healthcare policy, regulatory frameworks, and the advancement of integrative medicine.
