KIMS-Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases in Hyderabad

Dr. P. Raghu Ram is one of India’s most distinguished breast cancer surgeons, healthcare visionaries, and public health advocates, currently serving as the Founding Director & Consultant Surgeon of KIMS–Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases, Hyderabad, as well as the Founder, CEO & Director of the Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation. Widely regarded as a pioneer in breast healthcare in South Asia, he has fundamentally transformed breast cancer awareness, diagnosis, treatment, and policy advocacy in India through clinical excellence, institutional innovation, and nationwide public health initiatives.

A highly accomplished surgeon with exceptional academic credentials, Dr. Raghu Ram trained extensively in India and the United Kingdom, earning fellowships from all four Royal Colleges of Surgeons in the British Isles, along with prestigious international surgical honors. His global medical training, combined with a deep commitment to healthcare transformation in India, laid the foundation for his revolutionary work in establishing specialized breast care as a distinct discipline in the Indian healthcare ecosystem.

In 2007, inspired by his mother’s battle with breast cancer, he conceived and established the KIMS–Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases, South Asia’s first purpose-built comprehensive breast health center. This landmark institution redefined breast care standards in India by introducing multidisciplinary, patient-centered, technology-driven breast healthcare under one roof. The center’s success has since inspired similar dedicated breast units across the country, significantly elevating the standard of care for breast diseases nationwide.

Beyond surgery, Dr. Raghu Ram’s mission is deeply rooted in breast cancer awareness and early detection. Through the Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation, he has spearheaded thousands of awareness programs, launched South Asia’s largest population-based breast cancer screening initiative, and introduced innovative digital tools including the world’s first multilingual breast health mobile application. His work has been instrumental in breaking cultural taboos around breast health and bringing preventive care to millions, particularly in underserved rural communities.

His extraordinary contributions have earned him some of the highest recognitions in medicine and public service, including the Padma Shri (2015), Dr. B.C. Roy National Award (2016), and the prestigious OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) conferred by Queen Elizabeth II in 2021 for services to breast cancer care and UK–India relations. He has also held influential leadership positions such as President of the Association of Surgeons of India, further contributing to surgical education and policy development at national and global levels.

Through his pioneering surgical practice, institution building, public health leadership, and transformative advocacy, Dr. P. Raghu Ram continues to redefine breast healthcare in India—combining global clinical standards with compassionate, accessible, and innovation-led care that has impacted countless lives across the nation and beyond.
