Dr. Raj Shankar Ghosh

Dr. Raj Shankar Ghosh is a physician with training from national and international academic institutions in public health policies, planning, and program delivery. Over the past 30 years, Dr. Ghosh has been involved in a wide range of public health activities, from planning and implementation of public health programs at a grassroots level to advocating for effective policy decisions at national and regional levels on infectious diseases, vaccines, and drugs. Dr. Ghosh’s professional journey started with an NGO, Bhoruka Charitable Trust, in the deep deserts of India. Thereafter, he served as a medical officer at a primary health center in the West Bengal State Health Services. Later he served as regional coordinator of the Southeast Region of WHO’s National Polio Surveillance Project in India. He was the director of immunizations in PATH India. In PATH, he was also the director for the Japanese Encephalitis Project that served 13 counties in the Western Pacific Region and Southeast Region. Following his tenure at PATH, Dr. Ghosh was vice president and regional director of South Asia at the non-profit drug development company, Institute for OneWorld Health. In 2013, Dr. Ghosh joined the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as deputy director, managing the foundation’s investments in vaccine delivery and infectious diseases in India. In November 2022, Dr. Ghosh moved on from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to start a Quality, Equity, and Inclusiveness (QEI) initiative in partnership with the Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi. This initiative aims to design, deliver, document, and disseminate primary healthcare interventions for marginalized populations across India. The QEI initiative partners with multiple grassroots-level community-based organizations serving marginalized populations. Additionally, Dr. Ghosh currently advises organizations on a variety of public health priorities ranging from climate health, One Health, antimicrobial resistance, disease surveillance, and immunization programs in South Asian countries. In 2013 the Indian Public Health Association conferred an Honorary Fellowship to Dr. Ghosh for his contribution to public health in India and the South Asian region.
