Dr. (Smt.) Tamilisai Soundararajan is a distinguished physician-turned-public leader whose career reflects a deep commitment to public service, social empowerment, and nation-building. Born on June 2, 1961, in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, she grew up in a politically aware family, which nurtured her early interest in leadership and governance.

Academically accomplished, Dr. Soundararajan graduated from Ethiraj College for Women before earning her MBBS from Madras Medical College and specializing in obstetrics and gynecology at Dr. MGR Medical University. She further enhanced her clinical expertise with advanced training in sonology and fetal therapy in Canada. Beginning her professional journey as a gynecologist and later serving as an assistant professor at Ramachandra Medical College, she developed a strong foundation in healthcare and education that continues to inform her public initiatives.

Her transition into public life was marked by steady leadership roles within the Bharatiya Janata Party, where she rose from South Chennai District Medical Wing Secretary in 1999 to become National Secretary and later President of the party’s Tamil Nadu unit. Under her stewardship, organizational membership expanded significantly, reflecting her ability to mobilize grassroots support and strengthen institutional frameworks.

In September 2019, she was appointed the second Governor of Telangana, becoming the first woman to hold the office, and in February 2021, she assumed additional charge as Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. During her tenure, she championed academic excellence through initiatives such as the Chancellor’s Awards and supported public health and nutrition programs aimed at improving outcomes for vulnerable communities.

Recognized for her contributions to society and her advocacy for gender equality and women’s empowerment, she received the “International Rising Star of the Year—2018” award from a U.S.-based advisory task force.
