Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University
Dr. Supriya Bhalerao is a distinguished clinician-researcher and professor at the Interactive Research School for Health Affairs (IRSHA), Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be) University, Pune, where she leads the Obesity-Diabetes Research Laboratory with a clear mission to strengthen the scientific evidence base for prevention and management of metabolic disorders through integrative, mechanism-driven research. Her academic credentials include an MD (Ayu), a PhD (Ayurveda), and a PG Diploma in Bioethics, complemented by advanced training in biostatistics, clinical research, and molecular biology techniques—foundations that enable her to bridge traditional medical knowledge with contemporary biomedical research methodologies.
With more than two decades of research experience, Dr. Bhalerao’s work focuses on the interplay between adipose tissue dysfunction, insulin resistance, inflammation, and oxidative stress—core drivers of obesity and type 2 diabetes—and on exploring safe, cost-effective interventions rooted in both Ayurvedic practices and lifestyle modification. Under her leadership, her research group conducts clinical studies alongside complementary in vitro and in vivo investigations to elucidate mechanisms of action for herbal formulations and mind-body practices, thereby addressing critical gaps in evidence for traditional and integrative therapies.
Dr. Bhalerao’s scholarly output is extensive, spanning peer-reviewed publications on anti-obesity effects of Triphala, body-image perceptions, metabolic syndrome markers, and randomized clinical protocols evaluating yoga interventions, reflecting her commitment to rigorous science that informs both clinical practice and public health.
Her contributions to the field have been recognized through prestigious roles on scientific advisory committees and expert panels, including membership of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Institute for Training and Research in Ayurveda, Jamnagar; appointment as an expert in WHO Research Priority Settings for Traditional Medicine; and participation on the WHO-Global Centre for Traditional Medicine Evidence Editorial Board. She also serves on expert panels for the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), underscoring her influence in shaping research and policy at national and international levels.
Through a blend of clinical insight, methodological rigor, and translational research focus, Dr. Supriya Bhalerao continues to advance understanding of metabolic disease mechanisms and integrative management strategies, driving impactful science that bridges Ayurveda, life sciences, and public health.
