RA Badwe

Director,

Tata Memorial Centre

Rajendra Achyut Badwe is a distinguished Indian surgical oncologist and, until recently, the director of Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), Mumbai—one of the country’s premier cancer-treatment and research institutions.

Dr. Badwe completed his MBBS and MS (General Surgery) in Mumbai, supported by the Dorab Tata Scholarship. He further refined his expertise in oncology with training at globally renowned centers: as a Fellow at Toranomon Hospital, Tokyo, and later at Royal Marsden Hospital and Guy’s Hospital, London (part of King’s College London) between 1989 and 1992.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Dr. Badwe has led and overseen thousands of cancer surgeries—notably in breast cancer—and has emerged as a global thought leader in oncology. His research has been especially pioneering: a landmark Indian clinical trial involving 1,000 breast cancer patients demonstrated a more than 25% reduction in mortality—a contribution that has had worldwide ramifications for cost-effective cancer care.

During his tenure as Director of TMC (which he held for about 15 years until his retirement in late 2023), Dr. Badwe spearheaded a massive expansion of cancer-care capacity across India. Under his guidance, TMC extended its footprint beyond Mumbai—building new centers, scaling up facilities, and embedding a networked, inclusive model of care meant to serve patients from all socioeconomic backgrounds.

In recognition of his services, Dr. Badwe has been honored with several major awards: in 2013 he was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors, as well as the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence in Public Administration, Academics, and Management. He has also received international accolades, including the UICC Reach to Recovery International Medal for contributions to global oncology.

Beyond surgery and research, Dr. Badwe’s vision for cancer care has emphasized affordability, uniform standards, and a networked delivery model—aiming to make high-quality oncology care accessible across India irrespective of socio-economic status.

In sum, through his clinical excellence, pioneering research, administrative leadership, and commitment to equitable cancer care, Rajendra A. Badwe has played a transformative role in shaping the landscape of oncology and cancer treatment in India.
