Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey is a senior Indian politician and veteran leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with a political career spanning over four decades. Born on 2 January 1953 in Dariyapur, Bhagalpur District, Bihar, he began his public life as a student leader at Patna University and became actively involved in the JP Movement of the 1970s, during which he was detained under the Emergency. He entered electoral politics with the BJP (and its predecessor, the Jan Sangh) and went on to serve five consecutive terms as a Member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, where he held key state portfolios including Health, Urban Development and Public Health Engineering. His long association with grassroots development and social mobilisation established him as a key regional figure in Bihar politics.

In the 2014 general elections, Shri Choubey was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Buxar constituency in Bihar, strengthening the BJP’s parliamentary presence. In September 2017, he was inducted into the Union Council of Ministers as Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, where he championed public health initiatives, sanitation campaigns and expansion of health services, particularly in rural and underserved regions. He later served as Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, as well as for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, reflecting his versatility in addressing a spectrum of national policy priorities.

A graduate in Zoology from Patna University, Shri Choubey’s political philosophy has combined social welfare with development activism. He is recognised for popularising slogans supporting sanitation and empowerment of marginalised communities and for contributing to significant infrastructure and public health improvements in his home state. Beyond ministerial duties, he has also participated in various parliamentary committees and worked to advance policy discussions on health, environment and rural development at the national level.

Through sustained public service and leadership within the BJP, Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey has been influential in shaping policy debates on health, environment and social sector governance, leaving a lasting imprint on both state and national political landscapes in India.
