Shri Ramdas Athawale
Hon'ble Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment
Government of India
Shri Ramdas Bandu Athawale is a senior Indian politician, social activist and champion for social justice who currently serves as Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India — a position he has held since July 2016, where he works to advance inclusive welfare policy, enhance equity and strengthen programmes for disadvantaged communities.
Born on 25 December 1959 in Agalgaon, Sangli district of Maharashtra, Athawale’s formative influences were shaped by grassroots social movements and the legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s fight against caste oppression. He completed his undergraduate education in Mumbai and went on to build a career that blends political leadership, advocacy for social reform, and active engagement with community issues.
Over more than three decades in public life, Athawale has held key legislative and ministerial roles. He began his political journey as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council and served as a Cabinet Minister in the state government, overseeing social welfare, transport, employment guarantee and related portfolios. He moved to national politics with multiple terms in the Lok Sabha and, since 2014, has represented Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of India’s Parliament.
As President of the Republican Party of India (Athawale), he has built his political identity around advocacy for marginalized communities, particularly Dalits, and his party remains a key constituent of the National Democratic Alliance. At the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Athawale plays a strategic role in shaping policies and implementing programmes aimed at promoting social inclusion, improving access to welfare services, and protecting the rights of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, OBCs, persons with disabilities, senior citizens and other vulnerable groups.
Throughout his career, he has also engaged in cultural and literary pursuits, including editing social publications and leading organisations dedicated to arts and education, reflecting his broader commitment to social empowerment and public discourse.
In his ministerial capacity, Athawale continues to advocate for policies that enhance social justice, improved implementation of welfare schemes, and stronger institutional support for the most disadvantaged sections of Indian society.
