Sumaira Abdulali

Environmentalist Founder

NGO Awaaz Foundation

Sumaira Abdulali is one of India’s most prominent environmentalists and the founder of Awaaz Foundation, a Mumbai-based non-governmental organization dedicated to environmental protection, public health, and civic rights. She has spent more than two decades transforming issues that were once overlooked—particularly noise pollution and illegal sand mining—into matters of national policy and public concern.

Born in Mumbai in 1961 into a family with a strong tradition of social and environmental engagement, she was inspired early in life to act on environmental challenges that directly affect communities. Her first major campaign was against noise pollution in urban India, where she began systematically measuring noise levels across Mumbai and raising awareness about the serious health impacts of excessive sound. Through public interest litigations, data-driven advocacy, and sustained public campaigns, she helped establish silence zones, influenced amendments to noise regulations, and pushed for enforcement mechanisms that apply impartially across festivals, political events, and religious celebrations. For this work she earned descriptions such as the Indian “Minister of Noise.”

Abdulali’s activism against illegal sand mining marked another significant contribution. Her investigations and legal interventions revealed the ecological damage caused by unregulated extraction and brought the issue to national and international attention—including contributing to United Nations Environment Programme discussions on sustainable sand governance. She was even physically attacked by mining interests during field inspections, which led her to co-found the Movement Against Intimidation, Threat, and Revenge against Activists (MITRA) to protect citizen advocates.

Under her leadership, Awaaz Foundation has not only campaigned successfully on environmental issues but also provided legal support, education, and citizen mobilization across India. She has contributed to documentary films, written extensively in leading publications, and spoken at major global forums and universities, including Harvard University, IITs, and others.

Sumaira’s work has been recognized with numerous national and international awards, including the Mother Teresa Award for Social Justice, the Olive Crown Green Crusader Award, and election as an Ashoka Fellow. Through the Awaaz Foundation, she continues to champion a vision of sustainable development, public accountability, and empowered citizen engagement in environmental governance.
