About the Initiative

With the launch of the largest government-funded universal health coverage program in the world—‘Ayushman Bharat’ (PMJAY) 2018—the government has additionally exhibited its pledge to provide healthcare to the bottom 40% of the poor and vulnerable population in India.

Termed as a ‘game-changer initiative to serve the poor’ by the Prime Minister, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) is not just helping the crores of registered E-card holders but also strengthening thousands of empanelled hospitals and supportive healthcare infrastructure to deliver quality health outcomes along with adequate utilization of healthcare IT infrastructure and improved data management processes across the nation. In addition, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the pilot of the National Digital Health Mission, which was launched by our prime minister on the occasion of the 73rd Independence Day, was now officially implemented in many UTs in India. Under the mission, every Indian will be getting various integrated facilities and convenient and quality healthcare and will be offered an ecosystem that can assimilate existing health information systems and quality healthcare with better accessibility and inclusivity by leveraging the power of the digital technologies while ensuring the security, confidentiality, and privacy of health-related personal information.

THE PHILOSOPHY

Ayushman, from the Sanskrit blessing, “Ayushman Bhav” or “May You Live Long” longevity, is an expression to wish a long life to someone in the Indian tradition. In the day and age of vast prevalence of diseases and illness with the health of 1.3 billion lives at stake, the making of the Ayushman Bharat is in the effective realization of universal healthcare that ensures healthier and longer lifespan for all Indians.

On September 23rd 2018, in a landmark move, the Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi launched Ayushman Bharat – the world’s largest health insurance for the underserved and a healthcare model that integrates primary to tertiary care health services, covering over 50 crore people with an annual coverage of Rs 5 Lakh per family. The empanelment of over 16000 hospitals in the first of its kind public-private partnership model has made secondary and tertiary care accessible and affordable to masses. The empanelled hospitals have already benefitted over 7 lakh people in the first 100 days since the launch of Ayushman Bharat. The impact on the ground has been immense, with over 10,000 people are estimated to be benefiting daily.
